REGULATION

1. Purpose and Mission

To gather together Latvian and international winter swimmers, continuing an annual tradition. To promote winter swimming, as a method of human body hardening, improve communication between the clubs and groups both in Latvia and internationally. Promote hardening and winter swimming for residents of Latvia.

Determine the best individual swimmers and swimmers of winter swimming clubs of Latvia. Any winter swimmer from any country can participate at the championship.

2. Time and Place

Championship will be held on January 27, 2018 at 12.00 – Liepaja, Beberlini (Libiesu Street 2/6).

3. Management

The championship is organized by public club organization “VeloRonis”, with the City municipality support.

4. Participants and Application for Competition

Participation is open to all interested persons, who complete an application form, online registration and consolidate it with his/her signature that corresponds to the state of health of swimming in ice water (0 +5 C) at the competition. During the championship, each person is responsible for himself or herself.

Participants under the age of 18 years, require the presence of the parents, who must also sign the application for participation. Member, who will take part in the winter swimming championship for the first time, are advised to participate in one distance.

Submission of applications for participants: online veloronis.lv from 13 December 2017 until to 22 January 2018 veloronis.lv. Accreditation of the participants will be at 26.01.2018. 17.00 – 20.00 Royal Hotel Liepāja (Stūrmaņu iela 1, Liepāja), 27 January 2018 10.00 – 11.00 in Beberlini, Libiesu Street 2/6, Liepaja.

5. Distances

Championship consists of 8 heats:

1.heat – «Head-Up» 25m breaststroke with a time control consisting of 11 age groups (A-K) separate for women and man;

2.heat – 50 m freestyle with a time control consisting of 11 age groups (A-K) separate for women and man;

3.heat – 100 m freestyle with a time control consisting of 11 age groups (A-K) separate for women and man;

4.heat – 200 m freestyle with a time control consisting of 9 age groups (B-J), separate for women and man;

5.heat – 450 m freestyle with a time control consisting of 9 age groups (B-J), separate for women and man;

6.heat – Clubs Relay 4 x 25m freestyle with time control (2 age groups: S1 – under 150, S2 – over 151);

7.heat – “Young Seals” – dipping in cold water without time control;

8.heat – “Seals” – swimming up to 50m – freestyle without time control.

12:30 – 13:30    1. heat – 25m breaststroke „Head-Up” with a time control – starting with the oldest women group

13.30 – 13.40    8.heat – “Seals” – swimming without time control

13:40 – 14:40    2. heat –50 m freestyle with time control – starting with the oldest women group

14:50 – 15:10    6.heat – relay 4 x 25m freestyle with a time control (two age groups: S1-under 150, S2-over 150)

15.20 – 15.40     3. heat – 100 m freestyle with time control – starting with the oldest women group

15:40 – 16:00    4. heat – 200 m freestyle with time control – starting with the oldest women group

16:00 – 16:40    5. heat – 450 m freestyle with time control – starting with the oldest women group

7. heat – “Young seals”- dipping in cold water – will be happening parallel to the other competitions individually in a specially arranged place.

Award ceremony and closing ceremony after Championship in Beberlini.

Depending on weather conditions and the number of registered participants, the organizers have the right to make changes to the program in spoken or written manner, notifying participants of the championship. The championship is open for 200 participants; reaching the maximum number the registration may be stopped. Due to bad weather, the XIV Latvian open championships may be postponed!

8. General Terms and Conditions

Swimmers outfit – the usual swimsuit, cap and swimming goggles.

Outfit of the swimmer should not be with a special technology of insulation Thermo and Neoprene.

No gloves, socks and/or shoes.

The use of stimulant drugs, alcohol, warming lubricants and ointment for the body before swimming is forbidden.

Start – without jumping into the water, go in to the water to the bottom of the stairs or on the supporting step, hold on by one hand on the ladder. At the time of the start of the shoulders should be under water.

Races

Swimming 25m breaststroke “Head-Up” – the only permissible stroke is “Head-Up” breaststroke. The crown (the top) of the head must not be submerged during the race, except before the first stroke of the start or turns (it is permitted for water to overflow through the head) – for all age groups, men-women, with time control. If the crown (the top) of the head submerges during the race when it is not allowed, the swimmer will receive 5-second penalty that will be added to their race time.

Swimming 50m, 100m freestyle – for all age groups, men-women, with time control. Swimming cap necessary! Tumble Turn is prohibited!

A participant is allowed to choose up to 2 long distances (two of 100m, 200m, 450m).

Relay swim – 4 x 25m freestyle – the team should be men-women (at least one woman or one men or 2+2 from one club). Swimming cap necessary!

Relay – the start of each subsequent swimmer only after hand swimmer touches the wall of the pool.

To begin it is necessary to swim after immersion in water on the stairs with one hand, holding the handrail; the shoulders should be under water before the start.

The endurance swim – 450m freestyle with a time control (from 20 years old only – from B till J age category), swimming style – freestyle, indispensable water-tight swimming cap necessary and swimming safety buoy „Tow Float Buoy”, if the race is held in a pool, safety buoy is not a necessity, Tumble Turn is prohibited!

Swimmers of the endurance race will be admitted to the start only if accompanied by the Assistant – a trustee person who knows and is responsible for the swimmer, including guarantees his ability to over swim the distance.

The assistant must be able to provide the Swimmer with the necessary support after the swim until the swimmer is fully recovered.

The assistant must:

  • Follow along with the swimmer in the swim zone at the start;
  • Present on the start zone during the entire swim;
  • Make sign to the judge to stop the swimmer’s swim in case there is a suspicion that the continuation of the swim threatens the life and health of the Swimmer;
  • Provide the Swimmer with the necessary support after the swim, until the full recovery.

All participants in the endurance race must undergo a medical examination on the day of the swim according to the Competition Program. Medical examination includes, but is not limited to, blood pressure, alcohol and drug tests. The results of the medical examination are not discussed and having any negative indicators are grounds for refusal to admit the swimmer to the swim.

The organizers reserve the right to reduce the distance or cancel the endurance race if weather conditions become unpredictable and increase the risk of danger for swimmers.
The decision is final and may not be discussed.

Judges have the right to stop the Swimmer’s swim in case there is a suspicion that the Swimmer is behaving inadequately and the continuation of the swim threatens his life and health.

Only participants who have previously participated in winter swimming competition for long distances, or the degree of hardening can assure club leaders or doctor with signed affidavit and must be sent to Organizing Committee.

Finish – touching with the hand at the pool end wall (number board).

Participants must consult and comply with the competition rules of safety. If the participant sees that it is someone breaks the rules, should notify the Championship organizers or participants of the championship or the audience.

To avoid injury, it is necessary to comply with the rules to leave the pool or the hole immediately after the race.

“Folk Class” – no time control swims – “Young Seals” (quick dip), “Seals” (up to 50m swim without time control).

Protests – should be submitted in writing to the organizers within 15 minutes after the race result, upon paying the deposit of 10 Eur. If the protest is satisfied, then the deposit will be returned to the applicant.

9. Prizes

The fastest participant in the overall standings 25m and 50m distances (women and men individually) receive a money prize of 50 EUR.
